Sufganiyot with vanilla and nutmeg base, a touch of lemon, a slightly tart and sweet ribbon of housemade raspberry jam swirled around light, spongy yeast doughnuts conjures memories of times past.
A girlfriend of mine fondly recalled one of her most treasured food memories was sitting propped up at her grandparents’ kitchen table eating what they called Sufganiyot. Her grandmother cut a small piece of this still warm pastry and put in on the plate. The morning light made the sugar on top sparkle. The red jam spilled onto the plate, and she recalls running her fingers through it. Raspberry, slightly tart and sweet. The doughnut still warm, was so spongy and light. I’ve recreated her experience with this ice cream flavor.
